Katarina Witt began ice skating when she was five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent and she was accepted to a special school for children with a talent to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In this school she got to know the teacher Jutta Muler. Witt achieved her breakthrough by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. From that moment on her elegance and grace attracted the attention of everyone. She began to dominate this sport. Olympic Erfolg At Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. Four years later, her win, she managed to win an even more tighter race. Her free skate was not a success, however her gold medal resulted from the performances she made at both mandatory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt became the first female to be crowned champion in women's and men's figure-skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating following her successes as a film actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she enchanted fans despite the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in the year 1995.
